When you’re building a custom wood table, big decisions lead, including: size, style, finish color.
But it’s the seating choices that ultimately determine how the table, and the space around it, feels and functions.
This particular order was for a residential customer looking for a modern design with clean lines. She had already selected her stools and calculated the table length around their footprint, aiming to create a layout that worked for both her dining room space and seating choice.
The order was for our Gunnison Wood Table with Steel Legs → built to the following specifications:
78” L x 36” W
42” H (Bar Height)
Natural Finish Color
Like many of our designs, Gunnison is versatile. It’s often used as a high top table in commercial spaces, a behind the sofa console table, or (as in this case) to anchor an open-concept dining area.
A few weeks after placing her order, she started to question whether 78” would be enough.
Would it allow people to get in and out comfortably?
How much space would the inset table legs take up?
And she realized she’d not considered additional clearance for the swivel seating she chose.
At that point, she reached out to us for guidance (and peace of mind).
Extending the table length to 84” and moving the table legs closer to the outer edges.
This increased the usable space between the legs, allowing for a wider seating footprint and better clearance for movement.
Note:
Gunnison tables over 72” have legs set 12” in from each end (creating a 12” overhang).
Tables 72” and under have a 6” inset.
Reducing the overhang is a common request, and we’re happy to accommodate—just reach out to us at hello@kasecustom.com.

Once the bar height Gunnison table arrived, it anchored the room.
The reclaimed wood brought warmth and variation.
The steel legs added structure and contrast.
The proportions aligned with the space.
And, as often happens before everything fully comes together, one more adjustment followed.
She swapped her original stools with a lighter option. The swivel seating, while a good match on paper, felt heavier—both physically and visually–than expected. A simpler profile allowed for easier movement and a more natural flow around the table.
This shift wasn’t a correction. It was refinement.
Seating plans tend to come together once the anchor piece is in place, as proportions and spacing become easier to read. And in this case, dialing in the table length and leg placement created more flexibility to make the final call with confidence.
One of the most common things we see with custom wood furniture (especially in a high bar table and chairs setup) is that seating ends up doing more work than expected.
It determines how closely people sit, how easily they move, and how the space feels when in use.
A table design can technically fit six seats but still feel tight.
A swivel stool can need more clearance than its footprint suggests.
And a few extra inches in table length can be the difference between seating that just works and seating that’s easy and comfortable.
These considerations aren’t always obvious. They often come into focus as the design takes shape, when dimensions meet real spacing, and movement becomes part of the equation.
For a deeper look at how height impacts seating and layout, our Counter vs Bar Height Tables: Design Guide with Dimensions → breaks it down.
Every piece of handcrafted wood furniture we build is made to order so you can design what works for your space and how you plan to use it.
Just as importantly, we understand there are many considerations for how it will all come together.
In this case, increasing the length from 78” to 84” and adjusting the leg placement made room not just for seating, but for the comfort of the friends and family who would gather around it.
These kinds of adjustments are part of the process, and often what move a table from “works on paper” to a table that feels right once it’s in place.
